UX/UI App Design

Novaflip’s talented design team helps us deliver apps that both look and work great. Offering UX/UI app design sets us apart from other developers who only work on the coding side of apps. Our end-to-end service means clients do not have to juggle different agencies and can focus on their business.

What is the difference between UX/UI app design?

UX refers to ‘user experience’, while the term UI refers to ‘user interface’  Both are crucial to the successful development of a mobile app, but are more different than you might imagine. Before explaining the key differences it’s helpful to define what each of them is individually.

UX Design

A term first coined in the mid-nineties, UX or User Experience design, covers any interactions between the user and the app.

In fact, as a process, UX design can be applied to almost anything; cars, physical shops, furniture, and much more, but here we are talking about it in digital terms. UX design in mobile apps focuses on how users will feel and act as they navigate through an app’s interface. It is not about aesthetics or visuals. UX design focuses on the overall structure of the user’s experience with an app.

UI Design

Unlike UX design, UI, or User Interface design is a term reserved for use in the digital realm. It is, in terms of mobile apps,  the point of interaction between the user and the app and it involves the considerations that need to be made involving the look, feel and function of the app.

Good mobile app UI design makes sure that the app interface is intuitive and has to take into account all the visual elements a user will encounter as they use the app. UI Design covers things like colour schemes, fonts, images, icons, responsive design and more.

The NovaFlip UX/UI App Design Process

Understand User Demands

The first step in the UX/UI app design process is to address just what the client wants an app to do and who will be using it. As custom mobile app developers we can build apps that can do almost anything, but it’s essential to understand these key demands from the start.

Test the Concept

Once we have a UX framework mapped out, we ensure that it is tested with real-life users. This allows us to discover what works well, what does not work so well, what users might want from the app and anything that stalls their journey through it. Only when this is in place do we move on to UI Design.

Combine UX & UI

Once we begin the UI process, UX still has an important part to play. For example, the shape, colour, and font chosen to use to create a button is all a part of UI design. However, the usability of it – where it’s placed, the size, what happens when a user touches it, that’s all still UX.

FAQs

What if I only need an Android or IOS App?

We offer app design and development for both Android and iOS native apps. Given that a cross-platform build can take longer, focusing on one platform can be a great strategy. For Example:

  • You only require an MVP to show to investors
  • Your target audience only uses one of the platforms
  • You need to use lots of platform-specific features that are only available on one of the platforms
I have an idea but don't know where to start

After working with many founders over the years this is often the case. You can download our free App Planner to get started on your app planning journey. Additionally, we walk our clients through every stage of the app development process and offer advice on all aspects of the build.

Will I be able to give feedback as the app is built?

Of course! We use a system known as continuous integration. In short, this will produce a build (that’s an app on your phone) at the end of every day. In addition to this, we have regular catch-up meetings to check that progress is going to plan and make changes if required.

What is an MVP?

MVP stands, in this case, for Minimum Viable Product.

While founders are often excited as they believe they will be able to get a low-cost app, this isn’t the case. An MVP is about reducing features in an app so that it only solves the problem that founders are addressing.

In the mobile world there is a high expectation of quality, so producing an MVP with a low-quality look and feel won’t cut it with most users.

Can I get an MVP to show to investors?

Yes! This is something that we do as a part of building the full version of the app. It should be noted that the MVP will not be thrown away when the full app is developed. You can just think about it as an early version of the app with the core value proposition met.

Can you turn my website into an app?

We can do a direct conversion of a website. However, we do recommend using a subset of its functionality to begin with and seeing the app as a quick solution for users to perform 80% of what they do on the website.

What other costs are involved?

In addition to the cost of our work, there isn’t much else. The only additional cost we can predict is the Apple Developer program, which is $100 per year if you chose to commission an iOS app.

Can I have in app purchases on my app?

Yes, we can develop an app that supports in-app purchases. For delivering digital products or allowing extra features in an app, in-app purchases are a great way to increase revenue.
